The Diet of 2018: Vegan-ish

2018 has had a bunch of hot diet trends (we’re looking at you juice cleanses, Whole 30, Paleo), but how do you know which diet is the right fit for you? With plant-based lifestyles gaining momentum, many people are transitioning to vegan style diets. Or as some call it, Vegan-ish. This diet of the year is perfect for those who eat a vegan diet the majority of the time, but want to make their own rules along the way! We’re excited about all the yummy recipes we’ve seen this year, along with meal delivery services like Thistle that make eating vegan-ish super easy.

Back to the Basics

Let’s back up. If you’re not familiar with the vegan diet, this means no animal products including meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Say hello to veggies and hummus and goodbye to cheese and charcuterie boards. So why are so many people eating mostly plant-based? Many go vegan for ethical and environmental reasons as well as many compelling health benefits. Clear skin, improved digestion, increased energy, and a lowered risk of disease are just a few common effects!

That’s why it’s time for you to write your own rules! Going Vegan-ish allows you the freedom to listen to your body and make the right decision for you on a case by case basis. Instead of feeling restricted, you should feel free and flexible!

Covet’s Guide to Getting the Most Out of Your Internship

Internships are practically a requirement for a career in PR, but so often we equate internship experiences to being a glorified barista and copier. At Covet, we are lucky to have a blossoming internship program in which three times a year we hire 2-4 bright, aspiring PR pros to come work with us and learn the in’s and out’s of this agency. No coffee making involved. We believe much of what you get out of an internship is what you put into it, so we put together a list of ways to nail your internship and arm you for a successful PR career.   Always show up on time. This seems like a simple tip, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t follow it. Show up on time, or even a few minutes early, and prove to your employers that you’re eager to work.   Never accept idleness. If you find yourself twiddling your thumbs waiting for a new project, ask for more work! Not only will your employer be impressed with your efficiency, he/she will be impressed with your hunger to work.   Read, read, and then read some more. Become a voracious reader of traditional media and new media outside the office. Skim through magazines and scour blogs so that you’re caught up on current trends and events in the media.   Shadow someone in every level of the company. If you are seriously considering a full-time position at this company, you should know what your day-to-day would look like. Request a shadowing opportunity with each facet of the company so you have a general idea of each employee’s role in making the wheel go round.   Pick the brains of your superiors. Suggest grabbing a quick lunch or a cup of coffee and ask them for genuine advice on a future career in PR. Not only will you hear some entertaining stories, fostering a mentor relationship will help you so much later in your career.   Set up monthly check ups with your mentor to discuss your progress. Not only will your mentor provide you with helpful feedback, but it also lends itself for the perfect time to discuss your internship goals and what you hope to get out of it.   Ask for a letter of recommendation. When the time comes to complete your internship term, request a letter of recommendation from your boss. While you may not be job hunting at the moment, receiving the letter now will be so helpful when you need one further down the line.   Covet PR currently offers internships in Summer (May - September), Fall (September - December) and Spring (January - May). It’s often mid-Spring, mid-week or even just midday when “the feeling” begins to creep up. It's last night's argument with a family member distracting you at work or you suddenly remembering that 5 pm deadline right as the drinks arrive at happy hour with your boo thang. "Check please!" Cue the inevitable eye roll.

It is a hustlers world, and anxiety camouflages itself seamlessly into our everyday routines. We all live and work in a society that’s always plugged in, where high-stress levels are worn like a badge of honor in most workplaces. At Covet PR, we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with some of the most inspiring health and wellness brands in the industry. While healthy snacks, functional beverages, cruelty-free self-care products, and natural supplements stock our shelves, even we can be thrown off course by the evolving needs of our clients and industry, not to mention the ebbs and flows of life in general.

In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, the Covet PR team turned to our favorite RD’s, life coaches, podcast hosts, and authors to help us better understand the mental obstacles we face in the workplace on a daily basis like anxiety, fear, stress, and worry. Most of these tips and tricks should sound familiar. Some newer ideas will be so simple and clear they might set a string of lightbulbs off in your head that will help you think clearer, make better decisions, and develop a high-functioning culture within your workplace where you can foster balance and collaboration free of the nasties that cloud us day to day. Either way, any and every one can benefit from brushing up on their coping mechanisms to better combat stress and achieve mental well-being.

If you can harness these 6 totally free habits, you will undoubtedly set yourself - and your peers - up for mental, physical and spiritual success.

Inhale Gratitude

“Breathing exercises are a quick and portable way to relax in the moment — whether you’re commuting home or on a lunch break,” says Marlynn Wei, MD, psychiatrist, certified yoga and mindfulness teacher, and author of The Harvard Medical School Guide to Yoga. She pairs breath work with a walking meditation. “I inhale gently through the nose for five steps, hold for five steps, and exhale through the nose for five steps,” she says.

Breathing exercises can help you tap into your most grateful state of being. You know that gratitude can help you be happier, but it can also help you de-stress, according to Dr. Ross. “Mentally connect to three things that you are grateful for in your life. They can be big things, such as family or owning a home. If you can connect to something you are grateful for related to the stressor, even better,” he says. “For example, being grateful for the opportunity you have at work despite the mounting pressure of the current project or deadline.” This helps you reframe the situation.

Buy The Ticket

But we can all take a “get away” even if our most recent bank statement suggests otherwise. Whether you literally or figuratively "gotta get out of dodge," the idea is simple and remains the same; get away from your desk and decompress. Whether it’s simply taking a day-caytion and heading to a local park with your favorite read or pampering yourself with a facial and massage at that trendy day spa, the goal is to set aside the time and only do activities and visit with people that fill your soul.

PRO TIP: Out of PTO? Utilize popular Apps like Calm and/or Headspace to gain access to thousands of modern 3-minute meditations. It's like having your own mini vacation right there with you in your back pocket. You're already attached to your phone, so why not use it to your advantage?  Double up and listen while taking a walk around the block. Not into meditation? Even doing something as simple as setting a daily reminder to pause and be grateful will make a world of difference.

Eat More Calories

This one is counter-intuitive but an absolute truth. Keeping common sense in mind, opt for healthy snacks vs. the overprocessed and sugar loaded alternative. Max Lugavere, author of Genius Foods and host of The Genius Life podcast says that foods high in fat, protein, and/or fiber are your best bets, as they can set off a chain reaction of neurotransmitters that produce more serotonin and as a result, boost your mood. Take The Stairs

Literally! Take the stairs, park far away when running errands, and make it a habit to walk around the block or house whenever you're on a phone call. Unfortunately, there's no way around it; sweating releases endorphins and that makes you feel good. We love Kim Kelley’s (Lauryn Evarts of The Skinny Confidential’s Personal Trainer) approach to integrating a little movement into your routine, even at Happy Hour. “There are little things you can do every day to add steps and movement. When a friend approaches you to meet them for a cocktail after work, suggest hitting Soul Cycle for a 45 min. spin sesh first. Or when your girlfriends are all making plans for Sunday Brunch pose the question “Would you guys be open to joining me on a hike first so we can earn those calories!?” Attaching something you aren’t as motivated to do to a plan you’re already going to do will help you “balance your calorie checkbook” and eliminate excuses. Think “What did I do to earn this glass of Rośe?” before indulging and you’ll not only feel better, but you’ll look better too.

PRO TIP: Stay hydrated. While we all aim for that post-workout dewey glow, it's important to remember how crucial it is to stay hydrated. At Covet PR, we prefer to have a big bottle Core at our desk, in our gym bag, and in our car at all times. Go Natural

Being outdoors often reminds us of where we came from and connects us to our spirituality. When you feel your blood pressure and pulse rising, get up and go outside for a mental reboot. “Spending time outdoors is a great respite for an overactive mind,” says Dr. Boardman. According to Kate Hanley, author of the new book, Stress Less and founder of MsMindbody.com, gazing off into the distance can literally change your perspective. “Otherwise, you spend most of your time constantly looking about a foot and a half in front of you, most likely at your computer, which fatigues the eyes and makes your world seem metaphorically smaller than it is,” she says. “Extra points for kicking off your shoes, as having your bare feet on the Earth is especially energizing and grounding.”

Phone a Friend

We've all done it. Calling your BFF to vent is so helpful in relieving stress and shifting your focus. Verbalising your frustrations not only helps you to clarify key points but also helps to just get the negative convo out of you. The best part is your friend is disconnected from the situation and will be able to offer clear sound advice. Worst comes to worst, there's nothing like the power of a girlfriend who knows how to make you laugh at yourself. Even if you don't feel like sharing your struggles and stresses just hearing about someone else's day, life and happenings can get you out of your funk and focused on helping a loved one through theirs.

PRO TIP: Cleaning up broken agreements, arguments, incompletions can actually recover energy, that you can then put into more productive efforts. So no matter what the issue is, you owe it to yourself to reach out and communicate with loved ones. Suggest meeting for an activity to chat through unresolved issues. Focusing on something like volunteering at a church or homeless shelter will help to shift your perspective and make you current woes feel smaller and much easier to forgive and/or resolve.

Covet’s Guide to Gramming Like A Pro

Gram Like a Pro Have you ever caught yourself staring at your Instagram explore page then all of a sudden, it’s pitch black outside and you check the clock… it’s 1 am. We get it, it happens to the best of us. You may stumble across a few interesting posts or videos, but then you go down the rabbit hole and find the holy grail of Instagrams that has sucked you in so deep, you are trolling through their posts from late 2015 with no shame. This is the type of social media presence we all hope and dream to have. Easier said than done; with the influencer bubble ballooning to unsurpassed levels, the competition can be fierce! Not all hope is lost though, as we put together a list of ways to get your handle noticed and up your Instagram game.   Theme. Before posting anything you need to choose a theme for your Instagram. This aesthetic should be consistent throughout your posts, whether it is a specific filter you use for all of your photos or the content category you will be posting about. Really make sure that you are branding your Instagram account’s look, feel and tone to your personal liking so that the content comes off as organic and stands out amongst the millions of other users.    Posting Schedule. Find a time that works best for you to post your content, making sure you are not posting too often as this can overwhelm your followers. Posting once a day, anytime after 4pm EST has shown the most engagement for our Instagram. We have seen the least engagement on Sundays, as many people seem to be using social channels minimally on this day. Depending on your location this can vary. Audience Engagement. In order to boost your content and actually engage with your fans and followers, reply back to those who comment or like your posts. Use the explore page to find new users to follow, helping you to grow your audience. They may not always follow you back, but it definitely puts your account on their radar. The Art of The Hashtag. When choosing a hashtag, it can be difficult to decide between the millions of keywords that flood our search bar. Try to hone in on a few key hashtags that will target your audience and is consistent with your central theme. Keep in mind, your content may get lost if you choose a hashtag that is too large or may not be seen in a hashtag that is not used often enough. We recommend looking for relevant hashtags around the 50k range, as your post can get lost among the 1,492,124 #tacotuesdays, 3,216,802 #friyays and 2,073,437 #weekendvibes. Photo Editing. How do you decide between X-Pro II or Valencia? The filters on Instagram are endless, but oh-so-basic. If you really want your photos to look original, try different photo editing apps to get an authentic look and feel in line with your theme. Our favorites are VSCO, Adobe Photoshop Express, and Afterlight. How will you stand out amongst the crowd?

That's right, Covet PR sat down with your favorite Lifestyle Blogger, Lauryn Evarts, to learn how she built her very own entrepreneur & blogging empire.

Self-rated as "The most popular health and fitness blog in the world.", The Skinny Confidential is a blog that has always beat to its very own drum and inspired the new wave of up and coming Bloggers to do the same. Whether you're hooked on her blog, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Podcast or Book - this blue-eyed blonde gives her community a complete lifestyle guide covering topics from health and diet to fashion, relationships, beauty and everything in between. Lauryn caught up with us earlier this month over mouth-watering Pitaya Plus smoothie bowls made with Covet PR client, Suja's, soon-to-launch, Plant Protein Milk to give us the skinny on all things TSC.

C: How does authenticity play into your role as an influencer?

L: Never sell out for $$$, play the long game. Don’t promote s*** you don’t actually like, it ruins your credibility. Choosing authentic partnerships that align with your brand leads to the most success.

We know that in the PR industry, clients are often looking to both Micro and Macro Influencers to promote awareness of their brand, company, service or product. We loved learning that Lauryn has actually built her following by being selective, remaining true to herself, and only choosing to partner with brands that align with the overall TSC vision, regardless of whether the partnerships are paid for or not. 

C: How do you decide which channels are best for each piece of content?

L: I streamline and link all of the channels I use. For example, if I am making pancakes, I share the cooking on Snapchat and tell my community to check out the final product on Instagram, and once on Instagram, I link the recipe to the blog. It all comes down to consistency.

Our favorite take away from listening to this blog boss share her process was learning how Lauryn strives to give her audience value at all times. Whether through connecting followers in comment chains on her Instagram posts or being totally candid with her husband, Michael Bosstick, on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast, she is always leaving her community with a key takeaway.

Today, while Influencers are creating content that feels self-focused, and are engaging in the newest Social Media trends like comment pods to gain likes & comments, Lauryn is creating her own playbook. She spends her time more efficiently by genuinely following, connecting and hosting meet-ups for her loyal community. That, she shared is her best-kept secret to her ever-growing success and following.  

C: What are Influencers looking for when it comes to product & packaging?

L: Bottom line, when an influencer genuinely loves a product, they will integrate it into their everyday life and post about it organically. That’s the goal - If I get a necklace and I love the necklace, I am going to wear it to death whether it was sponsored or not.

Furthermore, Lauryn shared the importance of being detail oriented and personalizing product sends. Take time to consider the Influencer, and respect their time by sending product and packaging you know will be well received and post worthy.

For example, a jewelry brand looking to have Lauryn rock their new line of bling should consider the hundreds of necklaces she's received engraved with "L" or "Lauryn", so think outside the jewelry box and send her a pendant engraved with "Boss", short for Bosstick, and you're bound to garner a much more positive response or even post.

C: Where do you think the Influencer space is moving in this coming year?

L: Everything is going audio. Podcasts are an untapped space and they are extremely powerful. Podcasts give unique insights and values that no other platform does because your audience is able to listen to you. You are literally in their ear. Plus, you are able to respect their time by allowing them to cook, workout, or paint their nails while they listen.

Lauryn also made it a point to passionately share with us that blogging is NOT over-saturated. Blogging isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as it has become an integral form of advertising and a way for consumers to engage with brands. 

C: What are you working on now?

L: Next stop: "Focusing on TSC  podcast and working on my second book and a product line."

Lauryn wouldn't spill all the beans but she did share that when her line launches the details will be on point, (we all know she loves a detail!) and the Influencer's ease to photograph and excitability to share her product and packaging will all be top of mind.

Grab some of your gals and head to You&Yours, which can be found in the diverse and eclectic East Village neighborhood. Home to premium curated cocktails, You&Yours is San Diego’s first urban distillery. As both an event space and tasting room, You&Yours brings people together through their Insta-worthy bright and airy space and world-class cocktail program that pays homage to classic American spirits with a modern and fun twist. The Pendry Probably the buzziest place Downtown, The Pendry is San Diego’s solution to a much-needed spot to gather, eat, drink, and stay. While our neighbor to the north, which will remain unnamed, may have endless amounts of pop-ups and rooftop bars, the Pendry is giving any of those spots a run for their money. This boutique hotel has something for everyone, from their six unique restaurants boasting some of the best cuisines to a picturesque pool deck and nightclub, the Pendry truly has it all. We recommend hanging by the pool and ordering a green juice because nothing is more “San Diego,” than that.     Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream Confident about your favorite dessert spot? Think again. Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream is an ice cream lover's paradise filled with all of the sights, smells, and sounds of a classic ice cream parlor. And while the smell of freshly baked waffle cones might draw you into the store, the ice cream flavors will keep you coming back for more. Say goodbye to boring Baskin Robbin flavors and hello to flavors like Tahitian Vanilla, Mexican Chocolate, and more. Be sure to try the Hammond’s flight, a sample of six different flavors in cute little waffle cones. Our new favorite is the Strawberry Margarita Sorbet, a sweet and tangy combo that will please vegans everywhere. Hammond’s has three locations: North Park, Pacific Beach, and Point Loma, so be sure to try them all this summer! Cafe Coyote in Old Town San Diego With Mexico only a short drive away, San Diego is home to some of the best traditional Mexican cuisine in California. And if you know anything about us, we love our Mexican fare. We definitely recommend heading over to Old Town San Diego for the most authentic offerings north of the border. Once there, you’ll find a charming neighborhood with historic buildings, cultural sites, and plenty of authentic and delicious food. Cafe Coyote is the perfect spot to bring your family and friends, over a few tacos, handmade tortillas, and margaritas. Balboa Park We don’t know about you, but quite possibly one of our favorite spots in all of San Diego is Balboa Park. The quaint village of historic museums, parks, and gardens is located just a quick drive from Downtown, yet feels tucked away from the madness. Featuring the world famous San Diego Zoo and the Museum of Man, it’s a peaceful spot to grab a cup of coffee and take an afternoon walk with friends or even stroll on a romantic date with your significant other.   Refill Hillcrest Head over to Refill in Hillcrest for some of the best-baked goods, brunch, and cold brew from San Diego’s own Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. While the atmosphere and decor are killer, the crepes are this cafe’s mainstay. From sweet to savory, Refill will trick your taste buds into thinking they’ve landed in Paris, jet lag not included.
